Yesterday, your City Council sat down for almost a full day with the Chief and Council of the Kamloops Indian Band. We were joined by staff members in both communities. Over the past 100 years, these two councils have met at different times and relations have generally been very good. Our task yesterday, it seems, was to re-energize the relationship.
With Hugh Culver as a facilitator, we went through identifying key projects / issues on which we could better work together, we categorized them into broad headings (ie infrastructure, economic development, resource sharing, land use, the environment), and then we looked further to see which were short term projects / issues, and which were a little more long term.
Hugh will be putting together all our work into some sort of report, and I will be happy to share it here once it becomes available.
There was A LOT of goodwill in the room and I again learned much from our aboriginal brothers and sisters. A group of Elders also participated in the workshop - we were fortunate to have their wisdom with us.
I have got to congratulate Mayor Terry Lake for this initiative, along with Chief Shane Gottfriedson.
